One of my favorite tool in Photoshop is the layer style because you can create so many effects without having to do alot of work but edit settings. Layer style is great for adding details or creating an entire artwork like with this tutorial. By learning this tutorial you can expand it to create other human elements such as the heart, skin, liver, tissues etc.

Step 1 Start out with a 300 x 260 black canvas. Select Elipse Tool from the main panel with Paths selected. Locate the Geometry options, its the arrow pointing down next to Custom Shape tool icon. Inside this menu, check Fixed size and input 194px for W and H. Remember its 194PX. All you have to do now is click and a fixed sized circle is made for you.

Modifications

Path circle

Step 2 Select the Pen tool, Hold down ctrl from your keyboard and click anywhere on the circle path. 4 square points should appear from each side of the circle and 2 straight lines which depends on where you click.

Path circle 2

Step 3 While holding ctrl, click on the bottom point of the circle. You should have something like this so far:

Path circle 3

Step 4 Now the tricky part, were going to move the bottom part of the circe up to form the brain. Again while holding ctrl, click on the bottom point of the circle, Make sure your clicking the point not the line or else your modifying just the side, we want to modify the entire bottom circle. While holding ctrl and the left mouse click, Hold down Shift also. So in total your holding down ctrl, shift and left click from your mouse.

NOTE: You cant hold down ctrl, shift then click on the point in beginning, If you do that, the point will disapear. You have to click the point by just holding down ctrl first then follow it up with the shift key.

Brain Path

Step 5 Fill path #9A6B6C.

Brain filled

Step 6 Now that we have the shaped of a front-view brain, time to make it look like an actual brain and to do that we have to edit alot of settings in the layer style.

Patterns settings

Brain!

Step 6 Duplicate layer then create a new layer, Turn off the old layer, you wont need it but save it for the original layer style settings. Merge the duplicate and the new layer together so we can add a new set of settings for layer style. Add this settings:

Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Normal
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 100%
- Angle: 90
+ Use Global Light: Check
- Distance: 6
- Choke: 0
- Size: 10
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Check
- Noise: 0
Satin:
- Blend Mode: Normal
+ Color: #917C7C
- Opacity: 28
- Angle: 148
Distance: 32
Size: 68
Contour: Same as above
+ Anti-aliased: Uncheck
+ Invert: Check

Final brain

You can make your final image unique by experimenting with the settings! have fun.

Great result.
It is specialy interesting to create and merge layers to have a second set of blending options.

Finaly I reduced a bit opacity of shadow and inner glow to have a best result with a transparent background and reuse it in my next drawings.
