Step 1 Start out with a 400x 300 black canvas and a new layer set, name it box just to be organized. The box is made of five shapes which were going to make using the pen tool then blend with the background using layer style. Before you make the first shape, make sure you have Paths selected. When you have the Pen tool selected, you can find this setting at the top of your window.

Paths

Step 2 The first shape will be the left side of the box, create a new layer inside the box layer set then use the pen tool. Look at the picture guide below to see how I draw the shape. Once you have all the paths connected, fill path using this type of red #802419.

Front Of the box

Step 3 In a new layer, draw the front shape then fill path #802419.

Top of the box

Step 4 Now draw the top shape in a new layer which will be the inside of the box once we apply the layer styles later.

Shapes combined

Step 5 Connect all the shapes together, this will help when you play with the settings in layer style.

Side effect

Step 6 Before you start applying the settings I provided, just remember that layer style is very sensitive. Meaning if your shapes are bigger or smaller than mine, your box wont look exactly like mine so you need to adjust the setting to fit your box. When playing with the settings you want blend all of the shapes together. First were going to modify the left side, add the following settings:

Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Normal
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 82
- Angle: -145
+ Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 8
- Choke: 0
- Size: 21
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Noise: 0
Satin:
- Blend Mode: Color Burn
+ Color: 000000
- Opacity: 22
- Angle: -146
- Distance: 15
- Size: 46
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Uncheck
+ Invert: Uncheck

Front effect

Step 7 Here are the settings for the front:

Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Normal
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 89
- Angle: -34
+ Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 5
- Choke: 0
- Size: 27
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Noise: 0
Satin:
- Blend Mode: Color Burn
+ Color: 000000
- Opacity: 14
- Angle: 25
- Distance: 22
- Size: 21
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Uncheck
+ Invert: Uncheck

Top effect

Step 8 Now the top. This time were editing gradient overlay to give the shape an inside look effect.

Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Multiply
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 82
- Angle: 90
+ Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 9
- Choke: 0
- Size: 27
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Noise: 0
Gradient Overlay:
- Blend Mode: Color Dodge
- Opacity: 28
- Gradient: Default
+ Reverse: Check
- Style: Reflected
+ Align with Layer: Uncheck
- Angle: 0
- Scale: 15

Top effect

Step 9 We want this particular box to have an open bottom and top look so were going to add two more shapes. The picture guide below wont go in detail like the previous picture guide above but it's pretty easy to add new shapes once you have a complete 3D box to work with. Just remember to make it in a new layer and fill path using the same color #802419.

Top opening

Step 10 Now to blend with the rest of the box, apply this settings:

Drop Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Multiply
- Color: #000000
- Opacity: 27
- Angle: 63
- Use Global Light: Uncheck
- Distance: 8
- Spread: 0
- Size: 9
- Anti-aliased: Uncheck
- Noise: 0
Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Multiply
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 82
- Angle: 90
+ Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 9
- Choke: 0
- Size: 27
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Noise: 0
Gradient Overlay:
- Blend Mode: Color Dodge
- Opacity: 28
- Gradient: Default
+ Reverse: Check
- Style: Reflected
+ Align with Layer: Uncheck
- Angle: 0
- Scale: 15

Top opening effect

Step 11 The last step, draw the bottom shape.

Bottom opening

Step 12 Blend the shape with the box using this settings.

Inner Shadow:
- Blend Mode: Normal
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 82
- Angle: 42
+ Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 12
- Choke: 0
- Size: 24
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Noise: 0
Satin:
- Blend Mode: Color Burn
+ Color: #000000
- Opacity: 22
- Angle: -167
- Distance: 19
- Size: 7
- Contour: Default
+ Anti-aliased: Uncheck
+ Invert: Uncheck

Bottom opening effect

Step 12 Now outline the entire box in a new layer. First select the brush tool and set the Master Diameter to 1px. You can find this option at the top of your window or by right clicking in the canvas. Set the foreground color to white then select the pen tool. Trace the edges of the box one side at a time, once you trace a side, right click > stroke path > brush then repeat step until you have the entire box traced. Set the opacity level to 9%.

Box outlined

Tricks Now lets make a copy of this box and turn it into a cardboard. First duplicate the layer-set and just apply a Color Overlay layer style to all of the shapes. The final image below is sharpened, has a touch of random textures applied through Pattern Overlay, soft gradient in the background and shadow effect.

Color Overlay:
- Blend Mode: Color
+ Color: #AC9072
- Opacity: 100%

Great tutorial... But I have a question.. I noticed on this tutorial as well as on the christmas ornaments tutorial...the background is set to black... Was this just your preference or does it make it easier to do... than let's say a background photo or something? ... Thanks and great work! John
